What sources ChatGPT cites in Mexico: 2026 study of 50 purchase queries

Updated on November 4, 2026.

When someone in Mexico asks ChatGPT which digital bank to choose or which insurer to hire, the answer comes with sources. Those sources are the new shop window: if your brand is not on the sites the AI reads, it is unlikely to be in the answer. To find out which sites they are, we ran 50 purchase queries on ChatGPT located in Mexico, across 10 industries, and classified each of the 279 citations it returned. We repeated the same questions on Google AI Mode for comparison.

The main finding: in Mexico, ChatGPT relies much more on government sources and comparison sites than on the press. News outlets were only 5.4% of its citations, compared with 15.8% on Google AI Mode.

What sources ChatGPT cites in Mexico: the results

We grouped each cited domain into six source types. The table compares the weight of each type on ChatGPT and on Google AI Mode.

Looked at per answer, the pattern holds. 60% of ChatGPT answers cited at least one company website, 52% at least one comparison site and 44% at least one government source. Only 26% cited any news outlet. On Google AI Mode, by contrast, a third of answers included a news outlet and one in four a video or social network.

What sources ChatGPT cites most in Mexico: the top 10 domains

ChatGPT cited 181 different domains across the 50 answers. The top ten account for 28% of citations, and seven of them are Mexican government sites or comparison sites.

Subdomains grouped (for example, Condusef's magazine and simulator count as condusef.gob.mx). Six internal links to chatgpt.com were excluded.

The presence of Condusef, Mexico's financial consumer regulator, and Profeco, the consumer protection agency, makes sense: for questions about money, insurance or consumer rights, ChatGPT prefers to back its answer with a regulator. Condusef's registry of financial institutions and Profeco's consumer magazines show up again and again. For the financial sector, this means that what the regulator says about your product weighs as much as your own page.

Where to publish so ChatGPT cites you, industry by industry

The average hides big differences between industries. In some, government sources dominate; in others, the companies' own websites do. This table shows the dominant source type in each industry and the number of citations of that type.

Brands: entities ChatGPT highlighted in the text of its answers, counted once per answer. This is not a market ranking.

Four practical rules for a marketing or communications team come out of this table:

  • Your website is the number one source, but only if it answers. In software and education, ChatGPT mostly cited the vendors' own pages. Pages that explain prices, plans, requirements and accreditation in plain text are the ones that get cited.
  • Comparison sites are the filter. For internet and phone plans, 16 of 23 citations went to comparison sites, mainly Selectra. If your brand is not well described on your category's comparison sites, the AI leaves it out.
  • In financial services, the regulator rules. Keeping your institution's profile up to date in Condusef's registries is part of your visibility strategy, not just paperwork.
  • The press weighs more on Google than on ChatGPT. Expansión and El Economista appeared on both platforms, but AI Mode cited three times more news outlets proportionally. To show up on Google and ChatGPT at the same time, press mentions are still necessary.

ChatGPT and Google AI Mode cite different internets

The most useful figure for planning is not which source wins, but how much they overlap. Of the 181 domains ChatGPT cited and the 133 Google AI Mode cited, only 36 appear on both platforms. Optimizing for one does not guarantee showing up on the other.

In addition, ChatGPT reviewed 643 search results to build its 50 answers and cited 279. In other words, less than half of what it read made it into the answer as a source. Being in the results the AI checks is necessary but not sufficient: the page has to contain the specific answer.

Google AI Mode, for its part, was the only platform that cited YouTube and Facebook frequently, and the one that relied most on news outlets such as Expansión, Milenio and El Heraldo de México. If your content strategy in Mexico does not include video or press, you are leaving one of the two platforms out. To work on both at once, follow our 5-step plan to get AI to name your brand.

How to measure your AI share of voice in Mexico

This study shows the market average. For a specific brand, the question is different: in what share of your category's answers do you appear, and how many does your competitor appear in? That is AI share of voice, and it is measured by repeating a fixed set of questions over time. You can run a first measurement with our free AI share of voice tool and read how to interpret it in our guide to measuring your AI presence.

If the measurement shows that your competitors are cited in outlets and comparison sites where your brand is missing, that is your work plan. In Mexico we tackle it with our GEO agency for Mexico, which combines answer audits with publishing, and with link building in Mexican media to gain presence in the sources AI actually reads.

Methodology

  • Queries: 50 purchase questions in Spanish with Mexican context, 5 per industry, across 10 industries: banking and fintech, insurance, telecom, retail, travel, education, automotive, health, business software and real estate.
  • Platforms: ChatGPT as it answers in its app (model reported by the provider: gpt-6), queried with DataForSEO's LLM Scraper, and Google AI Mode through its search results API, both located in Mexico. Date: November 4, 2026.
  • Citations: we counted the sources each answer shows the user. ChatGPT returned 279 citations in 50 answers; Google AI Mode, 165 in the 46 answers that included sources.
  • Classification: each domain was grouped by root domain and manually classified into six types. "Company website" includes banks, stores, universities and vendors selling the product asked about.
  • Limitations: AI answers change from one query to the next; this is a snapshot of one day, with one query per question. The figures show trends, not a brand ranking.
