Of the 3,730 source citations the 4 AIs made when answering 96 purchase questions with Chilean context, we classified each cited domain into two groups: institutional (the own website of the brand, bank, retailer or company that could be “the answer”) or earned media (news outlets, comparison sites, forums, Wikipedia, video: any third-party source).

Earned media by industry

The share varies depending on how regulated or intermediated the industry is. Automotive and real estate, with a strong presence of comparison sites (Autofact, property portals), have the highest share of earned media. Finance and health, where users tend to go straight to the bank’s or health insurer’s website, have the lowest.

Beyond which domains it cites as sources, we asked an AI to read the full text of the 384 answers (96 prompts × 4 models) and extract which specific brands are recommended. This is different from the previous section: an AI can recommend “Banco Santander” in the text without necessarily linking to santander.cl as a source.

We did not ask for this result: it is what came out of running the same study on our own category.

Methodology

We wrote 96 transactional questions in Spanish with Chilean context (“what is the best bank to open a checking account in Chile?”, “where to buy a used car with a warranty?”), covering 14 industries: retail, technology, finance, insurance, health, education, travel, automotive, telecommunications, real estate, food/delivery, legal services, marketing/B2B and home/pets.

Each prompt was run against ChatGPT and Perplexity (via the DataForSEO API, with web search enabled) and against Gemini and Claude (direct Google and Anthropic APIs, with their native web search tools). We extracted every URL cited as a source by each model, resolving Gemini’s redirect links (vertexaisearch.cloud.google.com) to the real domain behind each one.

Each of the unique domains cited was classified into two categories, using an AI model over the full list: institutional (the official website of a company, brand or professional that could be the recommended answer) or third party / earned media (news outlet, comparison site, forum, blog, review, video, wiki or aggregator: it talks about several brands without being one of them). Separately, each domain was cross-checked against a curated database of 1,111 verified digital media outlets to obtain an additional, stricter figure (4.8%) of citations coming specifically from news outlets.

Acknowledged limitation: the institutional/third-party classification was done by an AI model over ~800 unique domains. It is consistent but not infallible; some edge cases (e.g. a bank’s subdomains) may be mislabeled. The 4.8% of verified media, by contrast, is an exact classification against a hand-curated database.
