The key finding: AI recommends 3 times more Chilean companies than Google shows
We took the 20 highest-volume searches about travelling to Chile in each of the five markets, each in its own language and on its own country's Google. We noted which sites made the top 3 and asked four AI models the same question, written as a traveller from that country would ask it. Then we classified every site and company by country of origin.
On Google, the showcase belongs to Wikipedia, TripAdvisor, social media and blogs from the traveller's own country, which hold 34.0% of the top 3. AI, by contrast, answers with specific tour operators, hotels, airlines and wineries, and 44.0% of them are Chilean. But to find them it reads sources that are mostly not Chilean: only 26.3% of what it cites is a Chilean site.

Before looking at who wins, we measured demand: 339 keywords about travelling to Chile in Portuguese, Spanish, English, German, French, with Google Ads' average monthly volume between October 2025 and September 2026. Each country searches for a different Chile. We excluded ambiguous keywords, such as "rapa nui" in Argentina, which is also a chocolate shop in Bariloche.

The weight of Chilean sites changes a lot depending on the traveller's country. On Google, Chile does best in Argentina (33.3% of the top 3) and worst in France (8.3%). Where travellers search in their own language, blogs, agencies and media from their own country take much of the showcase: 51.7% of the top 3 in Germany and 43.3% in Brazil.

Google AI Overviews in tourism searches
48.0% of searches showed an AI Overview, the AI-generated summary Google places above the results. By country: Brazil 55.0%, Argentina 30.0%, United Kingdom 60.0%, Germany 45.0%, France 50.0%. Chilean sites make up 10.7% of its sources; the most cited are youtube.com, wikipedia.org, instagram.com, chile.travel, audleytravel.com, melhoresdestinos.com.br.
What a Chilean tourism business can do
The study leaves four SEO and AI-visibility lessons for hotels, tour operators, wineries, ski resorts and destinations that want to attract foreign travellers:
- Publish in the traveller's language. Each country searches in its own language and with its own words: "farellones" in Brazil, "paso cristo redentor" in Argentina, "osterinsel" in Germany. A Spanish-only site does not compete in four of the five markets.
- Take advantage of the fact that AI does look for Chilean companies. On Google, the top 3 goes to encyclopedias, social media and foreign blogs; AI, by contrast, names Chilean operators, hotels and wineries in 44.0% of its recommendations. It is the most open showcase the local industry has today.
- Be present in the sources AI reads. AI builds its recommendation from what it finds on Chile Travel, TripAdvisor, Expedia, Booking.com, Viator. Appearing in those guides, platforms and media, with reviews and mentions, matters as much as your own website.
- Measure Google and AI separately. Only 24.3% of Google top-3 sites are named by AI. A good Google ranking does not automatically turn into recommendations from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Claude.
Methodology
Demand. We measured 339 keywords about travelling to Chile with Google Ads volume (via DataForSEO): English in the UK, Portuguese in Brazil, Spanish in Argentina, German in Germany and French in France. Volume is the monthly average between October 2025 and September 2026. We grouped keywords into topics (Patagonia, Atacama, Easter Island, snow, beaches, wine, volcanoes and the south, border crossing and shopping, and Chile in general) and excluded ambiguous ones.
Google. For each country we took the 20 highest-volume searches, aiming for a variety of topics, and recorded the organic top 10 on its Google (google.com.br, google.com.ar, google.co.uk, google.de and google.fr) on desktop on 20 October 2026, together with the AI Overview sources when one appeared. A site counts once per search even if it has two results.
AI. For each search we wrote a question in the traveller's language, as someone from that country would ask it (for example, "I live in the UK and want to visit Easter Island. Which websites, tour operators or travel agencies do you recommend?"), and asked it on the same day to ChatGPT (gpt-5-mini), Perplexity (sonar), Gemini (2.5 Flash) and Claude (Haiku 5.5), all with web search, via DataForSEO. We then used Claude to extract the companies each AI model names in its text, separately from the sources it cites.
Classification. We classified each site and company by type and by the country where it is based; for multinational platforms we used the country of the parent company (Booking: Netherlands; GetYourGuide: Germany; Despegar: Argentina). A Google site and a company named by AI count as the same when they share a domain.
Limitations: AI answers change from day to day and depend on the account and location; this is a snapshot from 20 October 2026. The AI models were queried via API, with no user history or location. Country classification was done with AI and checked by sampling; there may be isolated errors. The total cost of the queries was US$9.5.

What do foreign tourists search for when planning a trip to Chile?+
It depends on the country. The top topic in Brazil is Chile in general (21.5%) of measured volume; in Argentina, Beaches and coast (19.4%); in the UK, Easter Island (45.7%); in Germany, Easter Island (30.5%); and in France, Beaches and coast (27.0%). The analysis covers 339 keywords with Google Ads volume.
Do Chilean websites show up when foreigners search for trips to Chile?+
On Google, 14.7% of top-3 spots belong to Chilean sites, 34.0% to sites from the traveller's own country and 51.3% to platforms or sites from elsewhere. In AI answers, Chilean companies make up 44.0% of those named. The best market for Chilean sites on Google is Argentina (33.3% of the top 3) and the worst is France (8.3%).
Does ranking in Google's top 3 guarantee that AI will recommend you?+
No. Only 24.3% of the sites in Google's top 3 were named by at least one of the four AI models for the same search, and 37.3% were used as a source.
Which companies does AI recommend for travelling to Chile?+

How was this study done?+
We picked the 20 highest-volume searches in each country (Brazil, Argentina, the UK, Germany and France), each in its own language, from a bank of 339 keywords measured with Google Ads. We recorded the organic top 3 on each country's Google and asked ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude, with web search, the same question as a traveller from that country would, on 20 October 2026 (400 answers).
