Link building platform or agency: which one should you hire?

A company that wants to climb in Google has two ways to get links on media outlets: use a link building platform and buy placements on its own, or hire an agency to do all the work. Both end in the same place, an article published on a real outlet with a link to your site, but they split control, time and risk very differently.

This guide is written for whoever has to make the call and may not live and breathe SEO: an SEO manager, but also a marketing, communications or ecommerce manager who needs to justify the budget.

What is a link building platform?

A link building platform is a catalog of digital media outlets where each site shows its country, topic, authority and the price of publishing an article with a link. The buyer filters, picks, sends the copy (or asks for it to be written), pays and receives the published URL.

Two concepts worth clarifying up front. A backlink is a link from another site to yours; Google treats it as a vote of confidence. DR (Domain Rating, from Ahrefs) is a 0 to 100 score that estimates a domain's authority based on the links it receives: the higher it is, the more a link from that site weighs.

The main advantage of a platform is transparency: you see the price and the outlet before paying, and you know exactly what you bought. The downside is that strategy is in your hands. If you pick the wrong outlets or the wrong pages to push, the platform will not fix it for you.

What a link building agency does

An agency sells a managed service. It starts with an audit of your site and your competitors, defines which pages to push and with what anchor text (the visible, clickable text of a link), negotiates with outlets, writes the articles and delivers a monthly report.

You pay for judgment and saved time. What is hard to see from the outside is where each link was published and how much the agency paid for it; that is why good agencies deliver the exact URL of every placement. If you go this way, read our guide on how to choose a link building agency before signing.

Link building platform vs. agency: side by side

The decision is easier to see in a table.

There is no universal winner. A platform performs better when someone in the company has SEO judgment. An agency performs better when nobody does, or when that person has no hours to spare.

What each model costs

We do not publish our catalog prices in this article, but there are reliable external references. Reporter Outreach's State of Link Building 2026 survey, answered by 500 SEO professionals in Q1 2026, asked the most they would pay for a single quality link:

Maximum price per link% of respondents
Under USD 1006%
USD 100 to 30018%
USD 300 to 50029%
USD 500 to 1,00031%
Over USD 1,00016%

The same survey shows that 64% invest USD 3,000 or more per month in link building, with the median between USD 3,000 and 6,000. These figures come from a mostly English-speaking market: many Latin American outlets charge less, but the logic holds. On a platform you pay per placement; with an agency, per placement plus strategy, writing and reporting. To judge whether the spend pays off, see our guide to link building ROI.

One piece of context: 47% of respondents are agency owners or freelancers serving clients. A large share of the world's link building runs through providers, not in-house teams.

When a link building platform makes sense

  • You have an in-house SEO who knows which pages to push and which outlets fit your industry.
  • You want price control and to compare outlets before committing budget.
  • Your demand is irregular: launches, peak seasons or one-off campaigns.
  • You are an agency buying placements for your own clients.

A good sign you are ready for a platform: you can answer without hesitation which three pages of your site you want to rank, for which keywords and against which competitors. If those answers do not exist yet, your first spend should be the audit, not the links.

When an agency makes sense

  • The marketing team has nobody with SEO experience.
  • You need a multi-month plan tied to keywords and traffic goals.
  • You want someone accountable for results, not just placements.
  • The goal includes press and reputation, not only Google rankings.

The hybrid model: a platform with a managed service

More and more providers combine both models. That is what we do at ESBUENISIMO LINKS: a catalog of more than 1,400 outlets in Latin America and other countries, where you can buy on your own, plus a managed link building service in Chile (page in Spanish) for those who prefer to delegate strategy. The advantage of the hybrid model is that you can start with support and, once your team gains experience, move to buying directly without changing provider or outlets. If you work across several countries, our overview of link building in Latin America covers the main markets.

There is one more benefit that matters to marketing and communications: articles on real outlets do not only move Google rankings. They also feed the sources ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity use to answer, and raise the odds that AI names your brand. In the Reporter Outreach survey, 74% of SEOs believe backlinks affect visibility in AI search, although only 24% track it. If that is your goal, see how we work on brand visibility in AI.

What to check before paying, whatever the model

  1. Outlets with a real audience. They should publish their own news and have traffic, not just a high DR.
  2. Verifiable URLs. Every placement must come with its exact link, which you can check yourself.
  3. A clear link policy. Google asks for paid links to be marked as sponsored and penalizes site networks built to sell links, according to its spam policies.
  4. Topical relevance. An outlet in your industry or country is worth more than a generic one with higher authority.
  5. Measurement. Decide in advance what you will track: keyword rankings, organic traffic and brand mentions in AI.

The real question is not platform or agency, but who in your company has the judgment and the hours to make good link decisions. If that person exists, a platform will get you more for the same budget. If not, pay for the judgment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a link building platform?+

It is a website where a company browses digital media outlets, sees the price of publishing an article with a link on each one, pays and receives the published URL. It works like a self-service catalog: the buyer sets the strategy.

What is the difference between a link building platform and an agency?+

On a platform you choose the outlets, the copy and the links. With an agency you delegate the audit, outlet selection, writing and monthly reporting. A platform gives more control and price transparency; an agency saves internal time and brings expertise.

How much does a link on a media outlet cost?+

It depends on the outlet, the country and the site's authority. As a reference, in Reporter Outreach's State of Link Building 2026 survey (500 SEO professionals), 76% said they would pay USD 300 or more for a single quality link, and 6% cap their spend under USD 100.

Is buying links on media outlets safe for SEO?+

Google asks for paid links to be marked with rel="sponsored" and penalizes artificial link schemes, such as blog networks built only to sell links. Publishing on real outlets, with useful and clearly labeled content, is the lowest-risk path.

Do media links help a brand show up in ChatGPT or Gemini?+

Yes, indirectly. AI assistants lean on authoritative sources, and a brand featured on recognized outlets is more likely to be mentioned. In the same Reporter Outreach survey, 74% of SEOs believe backlinks affect visibility in AI search.
