Buying backlinks: what Google says, what it costs and how to do it safely

Almost every company that competes on Google ends up asking the same question: should we buy backlinks? A backlink is a link from another site to yours, and Google treats it as a signal of trust: if well-known media and sites link to you, your page is probably worth visiting. That is why links have been bought and sold for more than twenty years, and why it is also one of the areas of digital marketing with the most fine print.

This guide is written for marketing, communications and ecommerce managers who have to approve that budget, and for SEO teams who need to explain it. It covers exactly what Google says, how much companies pay according to a 2026 survey, what the risks are and how to buy links with good judgment.

What buying backlinks actually means

Buying a backlink means paying another site to publish a link to yours. In practice, very different formats share the same name:

  • Sponsored articles (called publinotas in Latin America) in digital news outlets: a full article about your brand or topic, with one or two links.
  • Link insertions in articles that are already published.
  • Paid guest posts on industry blogs.
  • Bulk packages: hundreds of links on directories, forums, profiles or blog networks built only to sell links (PBNs, private blog networks).

The first two can carry editorial value and a real audience. The last one is exactly what Google's algorithms are trained to detect.

What Google says about buying backlinks

Google is explicit. Its spam policies define link spam as creating links "primarily for the purpose of manipulating search rankings", and the first example is buying or selling links for that purpose: exchanging money, goods or services for links, or running advertorials with links that pass ranking credit or carry optimized anchor text (the anchor is the visible, clickable text of the link).

The same page adds a clarification that is rarely quoted: Google understands that buying and selling links "is a normal part of the economy of the web" for advertising and sponsorship, and it is not a violation as long as the link carries a rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow" attribute. Attributes are tags in the code that tell Google how to treat a link; we cover them in detail in dofollow, nofollow, sponsored and UGC.

What happens if the link is not qualified? Since the December 2022 link spam update, Google uses SpamBrain, its AI-based detection system, to identify both sites that buy links and sites that exist to sell them, and to neutralize those links: they simply stop counting. In more serious cases Google can issue a manual action, which is reported in Search Console.

How much buying backlinks costs in 2026

There is no single price, because a feature in a national newspaper is not the same as a link on a blog with no readers. The most recent benchmark is the State of Link Building 2026 survey by Reporter Outreach, a US link building agency, which asked 500 SEO professionals in the first quarter of 2026 the most they would pay for a single quality link.

Maximum price per link% of respondents
Under USD 1006%
USD 100 to 30018%
USD 300 to 50029%
USD 500 to 1,00031%
Over USD 1,00016%

76% would pay USD 300 or more for a single link, and 75% expect prices to rise over the next two years. The same survey found that 64% spend USD 3,000 or more a month on link building.

Two caveats. The sample is mostly English-speaking and the data is self-reported, so it is not a rate card for Latin America: in digital outlets in Chile, Peru or Colombia a sponsored article usually costs less than in the United States, while the leading newspapers in each country charge considerably more than a regional outlet. And the lowest price is rarely the cheapest: a USD 30 link on a link farm can cost months of work if it triggers a manual action.

The risks of buying cheap backlinks

Low-cost links share warning signs that any team can check before paying:

  • Authority without traffic. A site with DR 60 (Ahrefs' Domain Rating, a 0 to 100 scale of the strength of a domain's backlinks) but almost no organic visits is usually a network built to sell links.
  • Mixed topics. If it publishes about casinos, crypto, mattresses and supplements in the same week, the outlet has no readers, only clients.
  • Imposed exact-match anchors. A seller offering to use "buy cheap sneakers" as the link text on every site is the pattern Google describes as spam.
  • No guarantee. Links that vanish after three months, or sites that get deindexed.

If you have already bought links like these and are worried, our toxic backlinks guide explains how to assess them and when it is worth disavowing them.

How to buy backlinks with good judgment

The useful question is not whether to buy, but what you are buying. A good paid link buys three things at once: authority for Google where applicable, real readers who can reach your site and brand mentions in outlets that AI assistants read today. That third point matters more every month: according to Muck Rack's What Is AI Reading? study (October 2026), more than 84% of the citations made by ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity come from earned and third-party sources, while paid or advertorial content accounts for just 0.3%. In other words, AI cites the outlet and what the outlet says, not the ad.

Checklist of 6 questions before buying a backlink: real readers, topic, whether it sells to anyone, how the link is tagged, who writes the article and guarantee
Six questions to ask any outlet or provider before paying (chart in Spanish). Created by ESBUENISIMO LINKS.

In practice, it pays to:

  1. Pick outlets with an audience and a related topic, even if their DR is somewhat lower. In the Reporter Outreach survey, 53% of professionals set their minimum between DR 40 and DR 60, and only 9% require DR 70 or higher.
  2. Ask how the link will be tagged and decide with that information, not afterwards.
  3. Vary the anchors: the brand name, the URL and natural phrases, never the same exact keyword on every outlet.
  4. Ask for useful articles, with data or an opinion a reader would want, not filler promotional copy.
  5. Go step by step and measure: a few good links a month, tracking rankings, referral traffic and mentions in AI answers.

Buying backlinks in Latin America: platform, agency or do it yourself

There are three routes. Negotiating directly with each outlet gives you control, but it takes time, contacts and invoicing with dozens of suppliers. An agency handles the whole process, strategy included. A marketplace lets you browse the catalog of outlets and their metrics and pick them one by one. The differences in cost and control are covered in link building platform or agency.

RouteAdvantageDrawbackBest for
Directly with outletsNo intermediaryLots of management time and little comparisonTeams with a strong press office
AgencyStrategy, writing and follow-upLess visibility into each outletBrands without an in-house SEO team
Media marketplaceCatalog with metrics, buy outlet by outletRequires judgment to chooseSEO teams and agencies

ESBUENISIMO LINKS combines the last two: a marketplace with more than 1,400 real outlets across Latin America, with authority and traffic metrics for each one, and a team that builds the strategy, writes the articles and reports results. The service for Chile is at esbuenisimolinks.com/link-building-chile.

What to bring to the budget meeting

To justify the purchase to senior management, bring three things: Google's policy as written (so nobody is surprised), a list of outlets chosen for audience and topic, not just authority, and a monthly measurement plan. Buying backlinks without those three pieces is a gamble. With them, it is a brand investment that works on Google, in the media and in AI answers at the same time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it legal to buy backlinks?+

Yes, buying advertising or sponsored articles with links is legal. What Google's spam policies prohibit is buying links to manipulate rankings without tagging them rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow". An untagged paid link may be ignored by the algorithm or, in serious cases, lead to a manual action.

Does Google penalize buying backlinks?+

Since the December 2022 link spam update, Google uses its SpamBrain system to detect sites that buy and sell links and to neutralize those links, so they stop counting. In serious cases it issues manual actions, reported in Search Console. Links tagged sponsored or nofollow do not violate the policy.

How much does a backlink cost?+

It depends on the outlet. In Reporter Outreach's State of Link Building 2026 survey (500 SEO professionals, Q1 2026), 76% would pay USD 300 or more for a quality link and 31% would go as high as USD 500 to 1,000. Digital outlets in Latin America are usually cheaper, except for the leading newspapers.

Is it better to buy backlinks or earn them for free?+

Ideally, combine both. Links earned through press coverage, proprietary data and relationships are the most valuable, but they take time. Sponsored articles in real outlets speed up brand visibility, referral traffic and mentions in the media AI assistants read.

How can I tell if a backlink is good before buying it?+

Check that the outlet has real organic traffic and not just a high DR, that it covers topics related to your brand, that it does not sell links to any industry, how the link will be tagged, who will write the article and whether there is a permanence guarantee.
