Most popular websites in Chile in 2026: the ranking from the Tranco list

What are the most popular websites in Chile? There is no official visit counter for the whole internet, but there is an open ranking that researchers around the world rely on: the Tranco list. We downloaded its November 1, 2026 edition, with the world's top one million domains, and matched it against Chilean and other Latin American domains.

The result: 2,477 .cl domains make the global top one million, 214 make the top 100,000 and 11 make the top 10,000. None reaches the top 1,000. Among news outlets, emol.com and biobiochile.cl are the only ones in the top 10,000.

What the Tranco list is and why it measures popularity

Tranco is a domain ranking created by researchers from KU Leuven, Université Grenoble Alpes and TU Delft, presented at the NDSS 2019 security symposium. It was built because the rankings used until then, such as Alexa's, were easy to manipulate and changed a lot from one day to the next.

To avoid that, Tranco does not measure anything itself: it averages five independent rankings over 30 days. The list we used (ID V354N) combines data from October 3 to November 1, 2026 from these sources:

The rankings are combined with the Dowdall rule: the first domain on each list gets 1 point, the second half a point, and so on. That is why Tranco gives a rank, not a number of visits. It tells you who is more popular than whom, not how many people visit a site.

One detail matters to any SEO team: one of the five sources, Majestic, ranks sites by the number of domains linking to them. In other words, backlinks are part of the definition of popularity used by the most cited academic ranking.

The most popular websites in Chile vs. the rest of Latin America

We counted each Latin American country's domains by their ending (the ccTLD: .cl, .mx, .ar and so on), including variants such as .com.mx or .com.ar. Chilean sites on .com, such as emol.com or latercera.com, are not included in this count, just like any other country's .com sites.

*.co is sold worldwide as short for "company", so many of those domains are not Colombian. Only 932 of the 7,022 use .com.co, the local variant.

Chile ranks fifth in the region, behind Brazil, Colombia, Argentina and Mexico, and ahead of Peru. The gap with Argentina and Mexico is partly about market size: both have more than twice Chile's population. Seen that way, the Chilean web is not lagging behind; what it lacks is any site in the elite top 1,000.

The most popular websites in Chile in 2026

This is the top 15 of .cl domains according to Tranco. We removed technical domains, which climb thanks to automated DNS queries rather than human visits: a BitTorrent tracker (tracker.cl), two hosting companies (hosting.cl and hostname.cl), the domain registry nic.cl and sfdc.cl, which has no identifiable public website. We also left out the highest-ranked .cl of all, a movie download site at position 1,706, and two domains of an online betting operator.

The mix says a lot about how Chileans use the internet: public services, banks, universities and retail fill almost the entire top 15. There is just one news outlet with a .cl domain in that group, BioBioChile, and one pure ecommerce player, Mercado Libre.

The most popular Chilean news outlets according to Tranco

For the media ranking we checked 45 Chilean news, radio and TV websites on .cl or .com domains. Of those, 42 appear in the top one million, 23 in the top 100,000 and only 2 in the top 10,000.

The order does not fully match the domain authority ranking we published in Chilean digital media with the highest DA. They are different metrics: DA or DR (Domain Rating) measures the strength of a site's link profile, while Tranco blends visits, DNS queries and links. An outlet can have plenty of visits and relatively few links, or the other way around.

What this website ranking means for a brand

For a marketing or communications manager, the list helps with three concrete decisions.

Choosing where to publish. A story in an outlet in the top 50,000 usually reaches far more people than one on a site that does not even make the top one million. That is the criterion we use for link building in Chilean media: real outlets with a measurable audience, not sites built only to sell links.

Looking beyond Santiago. Several regional newspapers appear on the list, although further down. For a brand with a presence in the regions, adding them can make more sense than repeating the same national outlet, as we explain in our guide to regional news portals in Chile.

Not trusting a single provider's metrics. Tranco exists precisely because a single ranking can be inflated. The same goes for DA or DR: cross-check them with real traffic, with the outlet's presence in Google News and with the quality of its stories. Methodology and limitations

We downloaded the top-1m.csv file from tranco-list.eu on November 2, 2026 (list V354N, data from October 3 to November 1, 2026, pay-level domains only, no subdomains). We counted domains by ending with regular expressions and looked up each of the 45 outlets one by one. The category labels are ours.

The limitations: Tranco ranks domains, it does not count visits; DNS sources favor technical domains and services used by many machines; and a Chilean outlet on .com does not show up in the per-country count. Ranks shift a little every day, which is why we state the exact list version. We will update this ranking when it changes significantly.
