The most popular news sites in Latin America in 2026: Tranco ranking by country

Updated on November 3, 2026 with Tranco list GQ38K.

Which Latin American news sites are the most popular online? To answer without relying on what each outlet says about itself, we looked up 105 news sites from Chile, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia and Peru in the Tranco list, the academic ranking of the world's most popular domains. The result: Infobae is the best-ranked Latin American news site, at position 1,046 worldwide, and Argentine outlets take the region's top four spots.

This ranking is useful for journalists, researchers and marketing or communications teams deciding where to publish. Here are the data by country, how to read them and their limits.

What the Tranco list measures

Tranco is a ranking of one million domains created by researchers at KU Leuven (Belgium) and other European universities so that academic studies wouldn't depend on a single provider. Its method was published at the 2019 NDSS Symposium under the title "Tranco: A Research-Oriented Top Sites Ranking Hardened Against Manipulation". It combines 30 days of data from five sources: Cloudflare Radar, the Chrome User Experience Report (CrUX), Cisco Umbrella, Majestic and Farsight, and keeps only registrable domains, without subdomains. The version we used, GQ38K, covers October 4 to November 2, 2026, and was generated on November 2, 2026.

Two important caveats. Tranco ranks domains; it doesn't count visits: position 1,046 doesn't mean 1,046 readers, it means 1,045 domains are more popular worldwide. And the lower the position, the more popular the site.

For reference, the best-ranked Spanish-language newspaper in the world is Spain's elpais.com, at position 678, followed by elconfidencial.com (1,190) and elmundo.es (2,235), excluding sports dailies.

News site ranking by country

The regional top 15 hides a lot: Argentina dominates the first places, but each country has its own map. These are the five best-ranked outlets in each one:

Global position in Tranco list GQ38K in parentheses. oem.com.mx is the domain of Organización Editorial Mexicana, which owns El Sol de México and dozens of regional newspapers.

Mexico stands out. It is the most populous country in the sample, yet its best-ranked outlet only appears at position 8,857. On the other hand, it has the most outlets in the top 50,000: 20 of the 24 we checked. Its audience is spread across many strong outlets. Peru is the opposite: three El Comercio Group outlets and RPP capture most of the attention, and only 6 of the 18 we checked make the top 50,000.

In Chile, the results match almost one to one the ranking we published yesterday on the most popular websites in Chile in 2026 with the previous version of the list: Emol and BioBioChile remain the only Chilean news sites in the global top 10,000.

Colombia shows a pattern similar to Chile's: two big outlets, El Tiempo and Semana, well ahead of the rest, and a second tier where newspapers, radio networks such as Blu Radio and Caracol, and business outlets such as La República and Portafolio coexist. Argentina is a special case, with four outlets among the 1,500 most popular domains in the world. In Infobae's case, part of the advantage is that it publishes editions for Mexico, Colombia, Peru and other countries, so its domain draws readers from across the region and not only from Argentina.

What this news site ranking means for a brand

Choosing where to publish. An article on an outlet in the top 50,000 reaches far more people than one on a site that barely makes the top 1 million. That is why, when we help a company publish on Chilean news sites or elsewhere in the region, we look at real audiences as well as link metrics. We apply the same criteria to link building in Mexico, Argentina, Colombia and Peru.

Not confusing popularity with authority. Tranco measures popularity. DR (Ahrefs' Domain Rating) measures the strength of a site's link profile. An outlet can have many readers and relatively few links, or the other way round. We compare both for Chile in the Chilean digital media with the highest DA.

Understanding how visibility is paid for. Across the region, news sites sell sponsored content under different formats and names. In Argentina and Chile it is called a publinota, and we explain how it works in what a publinota is.

Visibility in AI. Assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity frequently cite each country's most-read outlets. Being mentioned in them helps an AI name a brand when someone asks about its industry.

Methodology and limits

We downloaded the full Tranco list GQ38K (top 1 million) from tranco-list.eu on November 3, 2026, and looked up 105 news domains one by one: 23 from Chile, 24 from Mexico, 20 from Argentina, 20 from Colombia and 18 from Peru. We chose newspapers, radio stations, TV channels with news sites and digital-native outlets with national or regional reach. We left out sports dailies, such as Olé or Depor, to compare general and business news outlets.

The limits: the selection is ours and may be incomplete, so an outlet we didn't look up won't appear even if it is popular. Tranco ranks domains without subdomains, so outlets that publish on a subdomain or on their media group's domain may be underestimated. Some of its sources, such as DNS queries, may favor sites with heavy technical traffic. And each version of the list shifts a little: we give the exact version so anyone can repeat the lookup. We will update this ranking when it changes significantly.
