SEO for small businesses: how much to invest, what to prioritize and when to add link building
SEO for small businesses, with data from Chile: official figures on small companies, Google Ads cost per click by industry, how much to invest in SEO, what to do first and when link building makes sense.

Chile has 1,207,333 active companies, and almost all of them are small. According to the Unified Business Registry published by INE, Chile's national statistics institute, with 2025 data, 74.9% of companies that report sales are micro businesses, 21.0% are small and 2.8% are medium-sized. Large companies make up just 1.3%. In other words, competition on Google is mostly a competition between small businesses.
This guide to SEO for small businesses is written for the owner or marketing manager who has to decide where to put a limited budget: how much to invest, what to do first and when it makes sense to pay for links from news sites. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the work of ranking in Google's organic results, the ones you don't pay for per click. The examples come from Chile, but the logic applies to any market in Latin America.
Why SEO for small businesses is different
A large company can buy visibility on every channel at once. A small business can't, so SEO works differently for it: it is the channel where a small company can beat a large one on a specific search, because Google rewards a page's relevance and authority for that query, not the size of the company behind it.
Where people search matters too. In October 2026, Google handled 89.75% of searches in Chile and Bing 7.72%, according to StatCounter. For a Chilean small business, doing SEO in practice means doing SEO for Google.
| Size (by sales) | Share of companies with reported sales | What it means for SEO |
|---|---|---|
| Micro | 74.9% | Competes mostly on local and niche searches |
| Small | 21.0% | Can sustain a monthly plan and its own content |
| Medium | 2.8% | Already competes with national brands on generic searches |
| Large | 1.3% | Dominates brand searches and the most contested terms |

What not ranking costs: cost per click as a benchmark
The simplest way to value SEO is to ask how much the same traffic would cost on Google Ads. We checked DataForSEO, using Google Ads data for Chile, to see how many monthly searches some typical small-business categories get and how much advertisers pay per click on average.
| Search in Chile (Spanish term) | Monthly searches | Average cost per click (USD) |
|---|---|---|
| hardware store (ferretería) | 90,500 | 0.39 |
| veterinary clinic (veterinaria) | 49,500 | 0.48 |
| psychologist (psicólogo) | 33,100 | 1.26 |
| plumber (gásfiter) | 9,900 | 2.68 |
| dentist (dentista) | 9,900 | 0.98 |
| accountant (contador) | 6,600 | 1.94 |
| employment lawyer (abogado laboral) | 5,400 | 3.77 |
| locksmith (cerrajero) | 4,400 | 5.86 |
| electrician (electricista) | 2,900 | 3.25 |

The takeaway is straightforward. A locksmith who wants 300 clicks a month from Google Ads would pay about USD 1,750 a month in clicks alone, and the traffic stops the day the payments stop. A page that ranks for "locksmith" plus the neighborhood doesn't charge per click. That is why SEO pays off most in categories with high cost per click and recurring demand. If you want to see how to split budget between both channels, we explain it in the difference between SEO and SEM.

On a tight budget, the order matters more than the number of tasks. This is the one we recommend, from cheapest and fastest to slowest:
- Google Business Profile. This is the listing that shows up on Maps and in Search, and Google lets you manage it at no cost. Correct category, opening hours, real photos and replies to reviews. For a business with a physical location, it usually brings the most customers in the first month.
- One page per service and per area. If a veterinary clinic serves two neighborhoods and offers vaccines, surgery and grooming, each relevant combination deserves its own page with original content, not a list on the home page.
- Technical basics. The site should load fast on mobile, every page should have a unique title and description, and Google must be able to crawl it. You don't need an expensive site; you need an organized one.
- Content that answers real questions. The questions your sales team answers every day are article topics. Tools that show which pages already link to competitors, like the ones in our guide on how to check backlinks for free, also reveal what content earns attention in your industry.
- Authority: links and mentions. When your pages are well built and other sites still rank above you, the difference is almost always the links they receive.

How much to invest in SEO for small businesses
There is no single price, but there are benchmarks. In Ahrefs' survey of 439 SEO providers, the most common monthly retainer was USD 501 to 1,000 (20.4% of respondents), and the average reached USD 2,917 a month, pushed up by larger agencies. Freelancers averaged USD 1,348 a month. These figures come from providers around the world, mostly in high-income countries, and are published on the Ahrefs blog, so in Latin America they work better as a ceiling than as a floor.
More useful than a number is knowing what you buy at each stage:
| Stage | What it includes | Relative investment | When results show |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Foundation | Business Profile, service pages, technical fixes | Low: working hours, almost no external costs | Weeks on local searches |
| 2. Content | 2 to 4 articles a month on real customer questions | Medium: in-house or outsourced writing | 3 to 6 months |
| 3. Authority | Links from news sites and industry sites, press mentions | Variable: depends on the outlet and volume | 2 to 6 months after publishing |
| 4. Scale | More areas, more services, more languages or countries | High | 6 to 12 months |
The timelines are working references, not promises: they depend on the industry, the competition and where the site starts.
When a small business should add link building
Link building means earning links from other sites to yours. Google treats them as votes of confidence, and they now matter for something else too: AI assistants such as ChatGPT or Gemini tend to cite brands that are mentioned in the media. For a small business, three signals say the time has come:
- Your pages are already well built and competitors with weaker content still hold the top positions.
- Your category has a high cost per click, such as emergency services or professionals, where every position gained saves ad money every month.
- You want to grow beyond your neighborhood and compete on generic searches, where domain authority weighs more than a Maps listing.
You don't need to start with the most expensive newspapers. A regional or specialized outlet is usually cheaper than a national daily and, for a small business, often more relevant. There are free routes as well, which we collected in link building in Chile with no budget. What you should avoid are packages of hundreds of cheap links: sites with no readers, built only to sell links, which Google tends to ignore.
At ESBUENISIMO LINKS we work with more than 1,400 real news sites across Latin America, with their authority and traffic visible before you buy, so a small business can choose where to publish based on its industry and budget. If you also need someone to organize the site and its content, see our SEO agency service for companies.
Common SEO mistakes small businesses make
- Expecting results in a month. SEO compounds. What you publish today pays off for years, but rarely in the first week.
- Copying text from suppliers or competitors. Duplicate content adds nothing new, and Google tends to show only the original version.
- Measuring rankings only. What matters are the calls, forms and sales that come from Google. Search Console and Google Analytics are free.
- Changing the site without redirects. When you redesign, old URLs must redirect to the new ones, or you lose what you had gained.
- Buying links by volume. Ten links from outlets people actually read are worth more than a thousand from sites nobody visits.
SEO for small businesses doesn't require a large company's budget, it requires order: foundation first, then content and, once the site deserves it, authority. That is the path that lets a small business show up ahead of a big one on the search that matters most to it.
Frequently Asked Questions
How can a small business improve SEO without paying?+
Start with what is free: set up and complete a Google Business Profile, create one page per service and area, fix technical basics such as mobile speed and unique page titles, and publish content that answers your customers' real questions. Search Console and Google Analytics are free to measure results.
How much does SEO cost for a small business per month?+
There is no single price. In Ahrefs' survey of 439 SEO providers, the most common monthly retainer was USD 501 to 1,000 and the average was USD 2,917. In Latin America those figures work better as a ceiling than a floor.
Is SEO worth it for a small business?+
Yes. It is the channel where a small business can beat a large one on a specific search, because Google rewards each page's relevance and authority for that query, not company size. Organic traffic also doesn't cost per click.
How long does SEO take for a small business?+
On local searches, Google Business Profile improvements can show within weeks. New content usually takes 3 to 6 months to rank, and links from news sites 2 to 6 months after they are published. It depends on the industry and competition.
Is SEO or Google Ads better for a small business?+
They complement each other. Google Ads brings traffic immediately but stops when you stop paying; for locksmiths in Chile, the average click costs USD 5.86. SEO takes longer, but the traffic stays. It pays off most in categories with a high cost per click and recurring demand.
