SEO ranking: what it is, how long it takes and which factors matter in 2026
SEO ranking explained for businesses: what it is, how long it takes according to Ahrefs data, how many clicks each position gets, which factors matter in Google and AI search, and how to measure it.

When an executive asks why a competitor shows up first on Google, the real question is about SEO ranking. It is one of the channels that brings the most traffic to a business without paying per click, but also one of the most misunderstood: people expect it to work in weeks, measure it by position alone and forget that it now competes with AI answers. This guide explains what SEO ranking is, how long it takes according to the available data, which factors matter and how to measure it with business numbers.
What is SEO ranking
SEO ranking is the position a site's pages hold in Google's organic results, the ones shown below the ads, and the work done to improve it. SEO stands for search engine optimization. Google itself describes it in its SEO Starter Guide as the process of helping search engines understand your content and helping users find your site and decide whether to visit it.
Demand for the topic is real: according to Google Ads data pulled through DataForSEO in November 2026, "seo ranking" gets about 1,900 monthly searches in the United States, and its Spanish equivalent, "posicionamiento seo", about 170 in Chile, 320 in Mexico and 260 in Colombia.

The difference from ads is the payment model. With Google Ads you pay for every click and traffic stops when the campaign is switched off; with SEO you invest in content, technical improvements and links, and traffic compounds. If you are deciding how to split the budget, we compare both in our guide to SEO vs. SEM.
Why position matters: how many clicks each spot gets
The business question is simple: is it worth moving from fifth to first? Click-through rate (CTR) studies say yes, by a wide margin. The most cited one, by Backlinko, analyzed 4 million Google results using Search Console data supplied by Semrush; the page was last updated in April 2025.
| Google click metric | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Average CTR of the first organic result | 27.6% | Backlinko |
| Share of clicks going to the top three results | 54.4% | Backlinko |
| Likelihood of a click on #1 vs. #10 | 10 times higher | Backlinko |
| Clicks that reach the second page | 0.63% | Backlinko |
| Visits with a click on a result when there is an AI summary | 8% | Pew Research (March 2025) |
| Visits with a click on a result when there is no AI summary | 15% | Pew Research (March 2025) |
The last two rows are the ones that changed the game. Pew Research analyzed 68,879 real searches by 900 U.S. adults and found that when Google shows an AI summary, clicks on traditional results drop by almost half. Only 1% of visits included a click on a link inside the summary.

See plans and pricing →How long SEO ranking takes
Google is candid about timelines: its guide says some changes might take effect in a few hours while others could take several months, and suggests waiting a few weeks before judging whether a change worked. For new pages competing for searches with real demand, Ahrefs' data is tougher. Its study How long does it take to rank in Google, updated in May 2025, compared a 2023 sample with the original 2017 one.
| Metric (Ahrefs) | 2017 study | 2025 study |
|---|---|---|
| Average age of the page ranking first | 2 years | 5 years |
| Top 10 pages older than 3 years | 59% | 72.9% |
| Top 10 pages younger than 1 year | 22% | 13.7% |
| New pages reaching the top 10 within a year | 5.7% | 1.74% |
Ahrefs notes that if you look only at non-empty English pages, the share reaching the top 10 within a year rises to 6.11%, and that 40.82% of the pages that do get there make it within their first month. The takeaway for a manager is twofold: few pages win quickly, and the ones that do usually sit on sites that already have authority. That is why a serious SEO plan is evaluated in quarters, not weeks.
The ranking factors that matter most in 2026
Google uses hundreds of signals, but in practice the work falls into four areas, plus a new one added by AI.
- Content: pages that answer what people search for better than the competition, with data, examples and first-hand experience.
- Technical: Google can crawl and index the site, it loads fast on mobile and the internal linking structure sends authority to the pages that sell.
- On-page: titles, headings, anchor text and structured data that make clear what each page is about.
- Authority (off-page): links and mentions from trusted sites, especially national and industry media. We cover it in detail in our off-page SEO guide.
- AI visibility: the brand being cited in Google's AI summaries, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, which rely heavily on media and third-party sources.
Ahrefs' data on page age points the same way: the domain authority a site builds over years of links and mentions is what lets a new page compete. It is the slowest area to build and the hardest to copy.
How to measure SEO ranking with business numbers
| What to measure | Tool | How often |
|---|---|---|
| Average position for searches that sell | Google Search Console | Monthly |
| Organic clicks and impressions | Google Search Console | Monthly |
| Conversions from organic traffic (forms, sales) | Google Analytics 4 | Monthly |
| Referring domains | Ahrefs, Semrush or Search Console | Quarterly |
| Brand presence in AI answers | Regular queries to ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI summaries | Monthly |
Two caveats. First, position alone is misleading: a page can move up and still get fewer clicks if Google starts showing an AI summary for that search. Second, track searches with purchase intent, not just the ones that bring volume.
A quick illustration with the figures above: for a search with 1,000 queries a month, Backlinko's average CTR means the first result would get around 276 clicks. If Google starts showing an AI summary for that query, Pew's data suggests clicks on traditional results can fall by close to half, even if your page keeps the same position. That is why the monthly report should put position, clicks and conversions side by side, and add a fourth column: whether the brand appears in the AI answer. In Search Console, filter by query and by page to see that effect search by search, and compare periods of the same length so seasonality does not distort the reading. For businesses with several markets, such as Chile, Mexico and Colombia, it also pays to segment by country, because the same page can rank very differently in each one.
How to speed up results for a business
- Pick a few searches that sell and assign each one the page that should rank for it.
- Fix the technical basics first: indexing, speed and internal links to those pages.
- Improve the content until it is the best available answer, with proprietary data when possible.
- Build authority with links and mentions in real national media, at a steady pace.
- Measure monthly clicks, conversions and AI presence, and adjust.
Step four carries the most weight in competitive markets and takes the longest if done with content alone. If your company operates in Chile, see how we build a web positioning strategy for the Chilean market, and how we build authority with local media at esbuenisimolinks.com/link-building-chile.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does SEO ranking mean?+
It is the position a site's pages hold in Google's organic results, the ones that are not ads, and the work done to improve it. SEO stands for search engine optimization. Today it also includes appearing in Google's AI summaries and in answers from assistants such as ChatGPT.
How long does SEO take to show results?+
Google says some changes take effect within hours and others take months, and recommends waiting a few weeks before judging a change. For new pages to reach the top 10 the timelines are longer: according to Ahrefs (2025), only 1.74% of newly published pages reach the top 10 within their first year, and the average page in position one is five years old.
What are the 4 pillars of SEO?+
A common way to organize it: technical SEO (Google can crawl and index the site), content (it answers what people search for), on-page SEO (each page is well optimized) and off-page SEO (authority earned outside the site, mainly through links and media mentions).
How much should SEO cost?+
There is no standard rate. Cost depends on the size of the site, the competition for the target searches, how much content needs to be produced and whether the plan includes link building. Rather than comparing rates, compare the deliverables in each proposal and how progress in rankings, traffic and conversions will be measured.
Does SEO still work with Google's AI summaries?+
Yes, but the way it is measured changes. Pew Research found in 2025 that when Google shows an AI summary, users click a traditional result in 8% of visits, versus 15% when there is no summary. So today you also track whether the brand is cited in those summaries and in ChatGPT, not just its position.
